PRESS RELEASE 19 March 2010
NOW RECRUITING PIRATES!

The Manx Gilbert & Sullivan Society would like to invite any interested persons to come along to the first rehearsal for their forthcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance.

The rehearsal will be held at 7.30pm on Friday 9th April in All Saints Church Hall (Alexander Drive, Douglas) with free and open auditions for principal roles being held from 2.30pm on Sunday 16th May [NB now changed to 9th May] at the same location. Anyone over 13 is welcome to come along to these events with no commitment to having to take part in the show itself.

Karl Cubbon, Chairman of the Society, commented:
'This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who isn't normally a member of the society to experience and enjoy the work of Gilbert and Sullivan and hopefully consider staying on for the production. Pirates is a fast paced and funny musical which I am sure everyone will enjoy.'

The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most popular shows in the G & S repertoire and tells the comical story of an apprentice pirate, Frederick, trying to escape his apprenticeship to a tender-hearted piratical band so he can marry Mabel, the daughter of a Major-General. This being G & S, the story is never quite that simple and poor Frederick is bound as a Slave of Duty (the show's alternative title) to do the right thing at all times. Fortunately, in classic topsy-turvy style with many twists along the way, the story works out to the usual happy ending and everyone living happily ever after.

The Society will be waiving its usual attendance fee of £1 for the first rehearsal on Friday 9th April and, in line with previous years, the Society will NOT be charging an audition fee or requiring a person to join the Society simply in order to audition.
